Comparing serial I/O modules
RS232 I/O modules connect a serial interface to 8 digital inputs and 8 digital outputs. The XSP series is available with relay or semiconductor outputs in standard and narrow designs. Simple ASCII commands let your own application read inputs and set outputs.

Check that your controller provides an RS232 interface. RS232 is not the same as RS485 or a TTL UART interface. The standard parameters are 9600 baud, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit and no parity; consult the documentation for pin assignments and commands.
Select relay or semiconductor outputs
The XSP01R and XSP11R variants use relay contacts. The XSP01L and XSP11L have high-side semiconductor outputs. Check load ratings and galvanic isolation requirements against the specifications of the individual module.
Choose the enclosure layout and installation space
Compare the standard XSP01 design with the narrow XSP11 version. Allow space for connectors and cable routing. The modules mount on TS15, TS35 and G32 rails; dimensions are listed on the product pages.
